MASI :
Police stories with Arjun in the lead, promise plenty
of entertainment for action-lovers. Joining the long list of movies
that feature Arjun as gun-totting cop is 'Maasi', directed by Kicha.
The movie is about two gangs of baddies who want to
reign in their supremacy in the city. But their hurdle is Maasi (Arjun),
an encounter specialist.
Arjun carries the whole movie on his shoulders. He
sports a very serious look all through. A battery of villains in the
form of Pradeep Rawath, Ponnambalam, Kotta Srinivasa Rao and 'Dhool'
Sakunthala form part of the script.
If one expects too many things from this
action-flick, they would get disappointed. It has guns, bullets and
encounters all through, but the filmmaker misses out on the plot.
The story is as old as the hill. An honest police
officer Maasi aka Masilamani (Arjun) is determined to weed out criminals
Naaga (Pradeep Rawath) and Nandha (Ponnambalam).
There is a gang war between them to gain control of
the city. Maasi steps in and proves to be their hurdle in all their
attempts. Sequence of events result in Maasi losing his wife and mother.
A determined Maasi now plans it differently. There is
a twist in the tale which helps Maasi accomplish his task throwing
aside the goonda-political-police nexus.
Arjun's imposing portrayal is good. His body language
as a tough cop is worth a mention. His well-toned physique comes to his
rescue. Two leading ladies Hema and Archana have no part to play in the
film, where the major thrust is action.
Pradeep Rawath does a decent job. He oozes venom in his eyes. Ponnambalam and Kota Srinivasa Rao play clich�d roles.
On the technical front, Boopathy's camera is bright
capturing action blocks well, while Dhina disappoints with his musical
score.
Produced by Kovai Mani, Kicha's 'Maasi' begins on a
brisk note to lose steam as it progresses. Had the sequence of events
had some coherence, the film would have been more engaging.
