Movie Review:3

The long awaited movie 3 has finally hit theaters today. The film created an eagerness after the success of the globally hit song 'Why this Kolaveri Di' which created a stir online.
The film which stars Dhanush and Shruti Hassan is a romantic thriller, which talks about a particular disorder – Bipolar disorder. For some enthusiasts who wonder what the disorder is all about, it is  characterized by transitions between depression and mania and it is also called as manic–depressive disorder.

The movie as such might remind you in abundance of Selvaraghavan's earlier movies. Slight references and comparisons can be heavily drawn between 7g Rainbow Colony, Kadhal Konden and in fact the recently released Mayakkam Enna.

The only difference made is Shruti Hassan's role and her performance is highly appreciated, especially in her teenage avatar. The glances Dhanush and Shruti share are cute and admirable, which might remind us as a viewer, of our own school time love stories.

The film shocks you in the opening, with Dhanush's funeral. Shruti cries as she watches her husband's dead body being carried in to the house. Slowly the movie shifts to flashback.

Dhanush (Ram) and Shruti (Janani) are teenagers in their schooldays. Ram falls for Janani when he first notices to help her with a punctured cycle, what we put it as love at first sight.

Though initially Shruti does not accept his love, she eventually falls for him. In between the parents gets to know. While Janani's father warns them of their activities and even beats Ram, Ram's dad played by Prabhu is cool about it, that he even goes to an extent of giving his full support to them.

This phase is enjoyable with Ram's friend played by Sivakarthikeyan who unlike his debut film Marina engages us with his one liners and special punches. Many will be able to relate to the scenes in this phase, especially with Ram's character, who plays a typical teenager struck in love, who longs to catch her attention somehow by riding his Yamaha bike, joins tuition classes just to be with his girl, takes her for a ride in his bike, even if it means to ditch his best friend (Sivakarthikeyan).

The movie fluctuates between past and present, an excuse used to narrate the story. While Ram & Janani's love travels, the narration comes to the present, when police tries to question Janani on the sudden demise of Ram. While the police avoids interrogation on the servant's insistence not to disturb her at this juncture, the movie again gets back to flashback mode.

This time Ram & Janani are gown-ups. Janani who gets an opportunity to go abroad for further studies drops the idea and even fights with her mother and leaves the house only to live with Ram. Ram with the help of his dad lives with Janani in a flat. Sunder Ram, who plays the role of Senthil stands as a big support to Ram & Janani. In fact he lives with them in the flat.

Instances show us how Ram sometimes acts weird and looks very temperamental. This is noticed only by Senthil, who even gets hurt, when he tries to protect Ram. Janani who starts to realize the changes in Ram, will she discover what trouble he was in to and discover teh cause of his sudden death, forms the rest of the story and climax, which is very intriguing.
  • The story is engaging and the thrill as to what Dhanush's trouble is and how he faced a tragic death is maintained and has helped the film to some extent, as it retains the audience's interest. But the second half drags and audience looses interest to wait till the climax patiently.
  • Some funny instances were the couple's Marriage in a pub. Though we dont get to know what kind of work Dhanush does, funnily he asks his Father (Prabhu) to prepare his will on his wife's name.
  • But this kind of a psychological thriller, though could have had a different treatment altogether, the director has chosen the age old path of a love story woven to it. Or may be, Bipolar disorder has been used just as an option to make the usual love story look different?
  • While we have already told you about Dhanush and Shruti's acting caliber in this film, overall the performances are good. The supporting characters – Sundar Ramu, Sivakarthikeyan, Prabhu, Bhanu Priya and Rohini have also done their roles well.
  • The Camera work in the film is good, especially the moments captured between Dhanush & Shruti. While editing style is quite old school, they have tried to maintain the thriller effect, with back and forth flashbacks and present day scenes. In fact at times it gets boring.
  • Anirudh's music composition who has set the standards high on his debut movie with the viral Kolaveri, has done an appreciable job with the background score.

With all the hype that Kolaveri Di created and Aishwarya Dhanush's directorial venture we expected something, but was a duh. After some psycho-treatment movies which the audience gets to see in the recent times (read Mayakkam Enna, Muppozhuthum Un Karpanaigal), this film only bores you, except for the fresh pairing of Shruti-Dhanush.

Rating – 2.5/5
Verdict – Though comparisons can be drawn with Selvaraghavan's earlier movies, the output is okay and can be watched once for Dhanush-Shruti jodi.

Bottomline- If you had liked Mayakkam Enna you would not enjoy this film.
